  2. anybody could help me with Whorfian hypothesis?

i thought i really understand this topic but the fact is not...
i know linguistic relativity is based on our personal judgement & linguistic determinism is based on culture....
but then, i end up to think that both are the same....
    i couldn't elaborate more..
    really need help!!

  4. Santa : what they meant by era is, old english, middle eng, early modern and late modern.so total we have got four eras. each era has got their own important events such as,early modern english there was great vowel shift.long vowels became short..example if you learn phonetics and phonology ,in 1450-1550(early), Alice has [Ʀ] in "name," while Cole has the older [a]; in 1550-1650(late), Alice has [e], while Cole has [Ʀ]; and so on.Age may be the most important factor in determining which form a person will use--older people have older pronunciations, younger people have newer ones--but gender, education, geography, and other factors also affect individual speech. But now we have everyone speaking the shorter version unless we have vampires who live for centuries and speak the older version.lol! Santa i took the very important part for you to understand. If you don't understand keep reading in several times.Make sure my explanation worthwhile okay.good luck

  5. Rosnina as for my research and understanding..

    Language determinism : STRONG VERSION
-It limits what we say ,think and do.
    -language determines how we think
-express culture orientation (culture + thought + language)
culture orientation means, like when i say Robert Brown. What is in your mind? A cool English man ,fair skin, tall and etc.but do you know in reality Robert is an indian man.Hey if i say Indian doesn't mean he is dark.Robert is so fair ,he is a copy of Sharukh Khan. Now do you see the confusion?? that is culture orientation, limits what u see.

    Language Relativism: WEAK VERSION
-it influences and condition how we think and perceive the world
-it is shaped by language individual thought by the language to express them.
    - Example, snow.for us snow is just snow but for the Eskimos they have different types of snow such as tlapa-powder snow,tlacringit-snow that is crusted on the surface,kayi-drifting snow,tlapat-still snow,klin-remembered snow,naklin-forgotten snow.

    TO WRAP IT UP,
Language is not a mere tool for communication based on Whorfians hypothesis.it influences culture and thought processes. Thus we are conditioned by our culture.

p/s i hope this helped you compared to before.Just another thing, don't be stress, and take care of yourself.dont be like me I'm having high fever.sigh.. empty your mind,u will get the point ;) good luck

Santa, you have to keep reading until you understand what you are reading.
Yes,Yakshinee, good discussion...hmm,you still remember the examples I discussed in class.
Rosnina, this is why doing research and discussing your research in class important...it helps you understand the topic in depth...anyway,I think,Yakshinee has given a very good explanation...

See how useful the blog is.Although classes are over,we are all able to keep in touch and have a good discussion on the areas we are not so clear about. If you guys had only done so right from the start of the semester, the topics would've been clearer....anyway,better late than never,am glad you all realise the wisdom of the blog....
    Keep the discussions going.
Need to remind everyone...if at all a question comes out on 'culture '....please don't give the example of how "Malaysians remove their shoes before going into the house.....'!There are so many other examples........!So please write something different....surprise me by showing me that you are THINKING!
Same goes for Eskimos and snow.....show me that you are able to apply concepts learnt to the environment around you!

    2. Well,Fadwa,if a question on 'culture' appears, first of all explain what it means and how important it is in a short paragraph. Then give an example....the example can be based on any culture...don't worry, questions on Malaysian culture will not appear...questions will be general in nature.
Hmmm, excellent interaction going on in the blog!If only you guys had been doing this earlier......well...need I say more...
Regarding 'style',well, you guys acted it out so well in class, and now you've forgotten...simply means how you speak to different groups of people different ...remember???
As for 'speakers of English....'simply refers to all the different people who speak English for different purposes, you,me,the British,Americans,French,Libyans,etc...yes,Braj Kachru's circle,MacArthur's circle....I remember seeing so many of you having MacArthur's circle during class discussion....what happened???
Don't worry too much...you guys are suffering from 'information overload'!!!
      GOOD LUCK!!!

    1. Paralinguistic are the aspects of spoken communication that do not involve words. These may add emphasis or shades of meaning to what people say. Some definitions limit this to verbal communication that do not involve words. Examples of paralinguistic : Body language, gestures, facial expressions, tone and pitch of voice are all exmples of paralinguistic features.

  20. Guys don't get confuse with 'Slang' and 'Accents'..

Slang is the use of informal words and expressions that are not considered standard in the speaker's language or dialect but are considered more acceptable when used socially. Examples of slang words, cool, bling bling, and chillax.
On the other hand, accents refers to the characteristics of speech that convey information about a person and where he/she is from..for instance, when a person from UK speaks English,we would be able to tell that he's from UK. :)

  27. Let me help with McArthur's wheel.
    Simple explanation of McArthur's circle.

Tom McArthur is an author of The Oxford Guide to World English.

He stated that the central variety of the circle is idealization. It is also known as World Standard English or Written International English.

The next layer is regarding the emergence of English language to the regional standards. As example, British Standard English, American Standard English.

The outer layer is called localized varieties of English language. As example, Malaysian English, Singapore English.
