  1. Basically, Kinship is a relationship, or bond through either biological, cultural, historical, descent, who shares genealogical origin. A kinship can be connection by blood, marriage, adoption, and family relationship, relationship by nature or character. Kinship is one of the basic principles for organizing individuals into social groups, roles and categories. For an example, father, mother, brother and sister are the kinship among family. Meanwhile, uncle, aunt, Brother also signifies kinship. Descent, descent groups, lineage (progeny), affines (a person related by marriage), cognates (related by birth) and fictive (unrelated by birth or marriage) are the types of kinship.

  2. in my opinion, the term "Kinship" can be defined as different types of social relationships. This relation can be either among families, relatives, friends or so on. Actually, they called as biological, culture or historical descent. kinship system among family can be seen through marriage, birth, adaption and consanguine ( blood relation). for example, relations between parents and children are called as "biological". this happens when a mother give birth to a child. Besides that, there would be consanguines (blood relatives) such as uncle, aunt, brothers, sister and so on. not only that, we also have new relations in our daily life which are not connected by blood relations. for example, we go to the market and called people over there "uncle" or other names in order to show respect to them. thus these kind of relations are called as "fictive" in kinship system.

    thats all from me..

  3. Oh gosh! so disappointed to miss 1 class discussing about this interesting topic..

As far as i've read about it, kinship is a bond that binds people together either based on blood ties or marriage.
Examples for blood ties are the kinship between mother and daughter as well as brother and sister.
kinship between husband and wife is an example of kinship based on marriage.
Other than that, there is also another type of kinship which is not related by neither blood ties nor marriage. This type of kinship is called fictive kinship. This can be seen through the kinship between student and teacher. A teacher will act as the facilitator to motivate and guide the student throughout the learning process. Without this kinship, student could not be able to gain knowledge as they could not learn by their own without the help from the teacher..
This applies to the same situation when students do not have kinship among them in the same class. Discussions and the exchange of opinions could not take place if they do not socialize in group and create kinship among them.
Therefore, kinship is important in order to serve us better in our life.......

p/s : guys, do correct me if I provide wrong facts about kinship....thanx!

  4. Referring to q2 we would yes. Kinship is important and they do have link between kinship and culture. Basically kinship explains about the relationship that one has. There are many types of relationship however most of the relationship are build through marriage. The inter-marriage of one religion with another one leads us to having various custom and culture. For an example when a Chinese marry an Indian the children would be identified as a Chindian. Basically the child would be brought up in both ways, they will be speaking both Chinese and Tamil, celebrating Chinese new year and Deepavali. This eventually would lead the children to a set of new practice known as culture and relationship. Besides that, this also could lead to language dead and language extinct because the mixture of this both culture makes the children to speak both the languages and eventually they do not master both the languages and this creates a new language and the old languages are forgotten as time pass on and this leads to language extinct and dead.

  5. Basically kinship is about the relationship that one posses with another one. It can be biologically, through marriage, and more. it is actually the path way of producing more or newer cultures, norms and practice. It could be also described as the social organizer of the community. Kinship is also responsible for the extinction, dead, and creation of certain norms, values, culture, practice, languages and more.

  6. Kinship: Connection by blood, marriage, or adoption; family relationship.and the Relationship by nature... or ritual, that form the basis of social organization”, kinship is important because it maintaining family, cultural and community ties and we have many kind of kinship, for example blood ties the kinship between mother and son or mother and daughter also husband and wife, we can see another type of kinship is called fictive kinship.

Fictive kinship. Are people who are regarded as being part of a family even though they are not related by either blood or marriage bonds. Also used to refer to individuals that are unrelated by birth or marriage, but they have an emotionally significant relationship with another individual like teachers and students

  8. from my understanding from the references that i read, kinship merely means relationship between two living things. the reason i said living things because kinship is not only between humans but also between animals where everyone of us call it pet. relationship forms strong bond between each and everyone of us, in everyday lives. for me, no kinship means no life!

there are three types of kinship system. first, affinity, which means someone who is related to you through marriage. for example, brother-in-law. you do not have any blood relation with this specific man but you know the bond between you and him is inseparable. second, consanguinity which means someone who is biological link to you, or someone who has blood relation with you. for example, parents. parents are always the closest to us. even you made the biggest mistake in life, parents will always by your side to give you support. blood is always thicker than water. third, fictive which also means through adoption, no blood relation but yet you cannot ignore that relationship. for example, you addressed the tauke at market as "uncle" to show our respect and kinship. this fictive kinship also shows between human and their pets. for example, your cat will definitely "meow" or come near to you when you are home.

  9. So,why is kinship important Jenny?

  12. Hello guys…!!

Based on what I have understand, Kinship is the relationship that exist between people that created by marriage, birth, adoption or other rituals. Kinship between husband and wife is an example of kinship based on marriage. Besides that, we also can said that kinship can be either through blood relationship such as the relationship between parents and their children and also brother and sister. There are also a relationship that not related biologically and definitely comes from a different culture and society such as the relation among friends, teacher and students, employer and employee and so on.

    P/s : Mdm…forgive me if I am too late…

  13. hello friends,

Kinship is a relationship between people created by marriage, birth, adoption, or other rituals such as pets.the bond of blood or marriage or relation which binds people together in group is called kinship. for an example, relation between a mother and a son is called kinship because they are connected by blood. so every human and living things in this world have kinship and they should recognize the existence of some kind of kinship system in the whole world in controlling individual behavior and in maintaining social connection.

  14. Adam Chong (KJC 1080262)
    Jenny Chew (KJC 1080259)
    Kimalshene Mohan (KJC 1080403)
    Kimberley Chai (KJC 0950087)

1.) What do you understand by th term 'kinship'?

Kinship is the relationship that links family and individuals together. there are 3 type of kinship, the affinity, the consanguinity,m and fictive kinship. the affinity kinship refers someone related to you through marriage, for example, brother-in-law or mother-in-law. someone who has no blood relation to you. the consanguinity kinship refers someone who have biological link to you, for example, your parents. the fictive kinship refers to adoption, your friends and your 'aunt and uncle'. For example, jenny have as adopted brother. they do not have any blood relation but they share the same parents and everything. this is the third type of kinship which is the fictive kinship.

2.) is kinship important? is there a link between 'kinship' and 'culture'?

a kinship system is important because it shows how people organize relationships and their social interactions. a society, and culture, is made out of a network of kinship and interactions between people. if there is no society, there will not be a culture either. kinship is also important because it structures peoples' lives, foe example, the inheritance of property. in a traditional chinese family, the inheritance of the family property is patrilineal. kinship allows family members to determine who gets the rights to the inheritance, and in this case, kinship determines that the brothers and sons will inherit. this practice carried for generations, it became a 'culture'. another instance is the beliefs and superstitions that are passed down the generation, from parent to child. folk tales are a large part of any culture or society, and are shared through family kinship, and shared by friends as well. kinship can ensure the preservation of these cultural traits, and also can cause a culture to evolve, for example, the interracial marriage.

  15. kinship is the relationship created by people through marriage, birth, adoption and other rituals.kinship is the relationship between 2 people that created through the example give above. But not only human but animals also have kinship which we call as pet.there are 3 types of kinship which is affinity (connected through marriage), secondly consanguinity (somebody that connected through blood),thirdly fictive (through adoption).
kinship is important because it orders or arrange the relationship accordingly.

  17. Hey Guys, I guess this post might be useful for all of us. Based on my research, I have found the different terms and concept of kinship . There you go.. It's interesting !

Affinity: "Relationship by marriage ties. May include the relationship between corporate groups linked by marriage between their members. A relative by marriage is an affine "Whenever the connection between two relatives...includes one or more marital links, the two have no necessary biological relationship and are classed as affinal relative." . Contra. "consanguinity", "consanguine". (Note: The relationship of husband-wife in this context is somewhat ambiguous--a matter of some dispute amongst anthropologists.)"

Agamy: "The lack of any rule in regard to marriage within or without of a group; it denotes absence of marriage regulations on the part of a social unit."

Agnatic: "Pertaining to the reckoning of relationship by male link(s) exclusively, regardless of sex of Ego and/or Alter. An agnate, then, is a person related by patrilineal descent ." "In Roman law agnati were kin who traced their relationship by descent through males only from a common ancestor, who were under the authority of a single paterfamilias, and who resided together. Agnati could be adopted. They included women, but no kin linked through a woman." GK:18. Contra. "uterine".

Alliance: "In kinship theory, this refers to a view of society which emphasizes marital interactions (usually repetitive) between descent groups as a basis for social integration and group definition (RF-231ff.; NG232ff.)" DT. As Keesing puts it "a system whereby descent groups or other kin groups are linked by a rule of prescriptive or recurrent marriage so that the groups remain in an affinal relationship to one another across generations" (RK:147). Contra. "descent theory".

Alter: "The person to whom a relationship is being indicated; thus, in English kinship terminology, "male Ego refers to his FB as "uncle" and Alter reciprocates with "nephew". DT. Contra. "Ego".

Amilateral: "Ambilateral is sometimes used in kinship studies to refer to non-unilineal systems in whic an individual may choose to align himself with either of his parental groups. R. Firth argues that "The admission to membershilp through descent from either males or females--or both conjoined--shows that the hapu is not a unilateral group of the strict type. It may be called in fact, an ambilateral group, since both parents are eligible for the purposes of kinship affiliation" (R. Firth, Economics of the New Zealand Maori, Wellington, N.Z.:R. E. Owen 1959, p.112)." GK:22.

Amitaclan: "A clan with patrilineal descent in which unmarried females reside with a paternal aunt and bring their husbands to the father's sister's home. It parallels the avuncuclan, but is only theoretical." ES:72, GPM:71. An example of inventing kinship concepts which describe no known group.

Amitalocal Residence: "The norm whereby wives take their husbands to the residence of the bride's father's sister. It parallels avunculocal residence, but is only theoretical." ES:72; GPM:71. Another example of a totally invented kinship concept that has never been found in any actual human society.

Amitate: "In the amitate a sister is superior to her brother in that the paternal aunt can dictate the matrimonial destinies of her brother's children." ES:72, GPM:71.

Apical Ancestor (Ancestress): The ancestor/ess from whom descent is traced (the "apex" of the triangle of descendants).

  18. Basically I would say that kinship refers to the relationship that humans hold towards one another. It could be in various ways such as through affinity, descent, and many more. Kinship simply means different in different context or discipline. however they share the same contextual in common. This kinship however has the tendency of influencing various prospect and most commonly seen is in culture.
Kinship is also important as it could avoid the younger ones from being neglected. This is because at times parents fail to care of their children. When this happens, the kinship comes in such as grandparents, aunts, uncles and many more tents to take over the children's welfare. Why do they do that? It’s because the blood connection. This is only one of the examples of the importance of kinship. Kinship also ensures unity, tolerance, and many other aspects

  19. Kinship is the relationship between people created by marriage, birth, adoption, or other rituals. Kinship is a system of social relationships that are expressed in a biological idiom, using terms like "mother", "son," and so on. It is best visualized as a mass of networks of relatedness, not two of which are identical, that radiate from each individual. In our country we can call older people uncle or aunty for example in daily life we call a lot of people uncle and aunty but in western country it is not praticed that kind , this is what we call kinship .

  20. Hiiiii everyone...here is my research....Based n my opinion...... Kinship is a relationship which occur between 2 or more issue or people.here are many relationship which is commonly through genealogical origin, whether biological, cultural or any other path which has the relation between it.

But there are some other knowledge that I got from internet which I would like to share some which is:

1.kinship - a close connection marked by community of interests or similarity in nature or character which found a natural affinity with the immigrants

    some types of kinship are:

rapport, resonance - a relationship of mutual understanding or trust and agreement between people

sympathy - a relation of affinity or harmony between people; whatever affects one correspondingly affects the other; "the two of them were in close sympathy"

anthropology - the social science that studies the origins and social relationships of human beings

phylogenetic relation, affinity - (biology) state of relationship between organisms or groups of organisms resulting in resemblance in structure or structural parts; "in anatomical structure prehistoric man shows close affinity with modern humans"

filiation, line of descent, lineage, descent - the kinship relation between an individual and the individual's progenitors

affinity - (anthropology) kinship by marriage or adoption; not a blood relationship
blood kinship, consanguinity, cognation - (anthropology) related by blood
parentage, birth - the kinship relation of an offspring to the parents

fatherhood, paternity - the kinship relation between an offspring and the father

motherhood, maternity - the kinship relation between an offspring and the mother

sisterhood, sistership - the kinship relation between a female offspring and the siblings

brotherhood - the kinship relation between a male offspring and the siblings

marital bed, marital relationship - the relationship between wife and husband

So this are the examples which I effort to share sooo far….actually I m not that expert in explaining but I try my level best to refer the sources and explain it…thank you.If anyone wants to correct me pls kindly do it so I can learn more….

Kinship, relationship by blood (consanguinity) or marriage (affinity) between persons; also, in anthropology and sociology, a system of rules, based on such relationships, governing descent, inheritance, marriage, extramarital sexual relations, and sometimes residence. All societies recognize consanguineal and affinal ties between individuals, but there is great divergence in the manner of reckoning descent and relationship. Kinship patterns are so specific and elaborate that they constitute an important and independent field of anthropological and sociological investigation. In many societies the concept of kinship extends beyond family ties, which vary in breadth and inclusiveness, to less precisely defined groupings such as the clan, where consanguinity is often hypothetical if not actually mythological. As a rule, however, these groups maintain incest taboos as strict as those for close biological relatives.
